Can you believe it’s already June? The last few months have absolutely flown by, and we are excited to welcome the warmth of summer as we ease into presenting live theatre with fewer restrictions in place. Read on to learn more about what’s coming up soon at RLT!

The Mountaintop opens next week!

RLT presents the final show of our 2020-21 season, The Mountaintop, June 10-19 in the Stephenson Amphitheatre. This play by Katori Hall is a fictional depiction of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s final night on earth. On April 3, 1968, after delivering his memorable “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, an exhausted Dr. King retires to his room at the Lorraine Motel while a storm rages outside. When a mysterious stranger arrives with some surprising news, King is forced to confront his destiny and his legacy to his people.

Listen to Director Phillip Bernard Smith and RLT Artistic Director Patrick Torres discuss how the play humanizes Dr. King and encourages all of us to pick up the baton in the fight for justice in this episode of the RLT Podcast

We’re looking forward to hosting important community conversations virtually throughout the run of the show. Keep an eye on our website for dates and details, to be announced soon!

Healthy & safety update: A maximum of 300 tickets will be sold for each performance, and all performances will take place outside in the Stephenson Amphitheatre. Tickets are general admission, but attendees will be limited to designated seating areas to promote appropriate social distancing between groups. Masks will not be required when seated but are encouraged in outdoor common spaces and required indoors. Per CDC guidelines, unvaccinated patrons are still advised to take preventative measures, including wearing a mask at all times while attending outdoor events.

The Mountaintop runs June 10-19 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8:00pm. The Saturday, June 19 performance will be audio described for those with visual disabilities. Purchase tickets here! Recommended for ages 16+ due to strong adult language.

Special thanks to our show sponsor, North State Bank. Additionally, The Mountaintop is supported by the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, as well as the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
