Last Stop on Market Street opens on Saturday!

Raleigh Little Theatre’s 2023-24 Family Series kicks off this weekend with an imaginative outdoor adaptation of the award-winning children’s book Last Stop on Market Street

About the play: On a Sunday after church, CJ and his Nana board the public bus for their weekly trip across town to help out at a soup kitchen. Along the way, CJ notices the many differences among people and asks tons of curious questions: Why don’t we have a car? How come that man can’t see? How come it’s always so dirty over there? How?…Why?…With Nana’s fearless and compassionate guidance, CJ discovers that everyone and everything has a unique rhythm and purpose; that the world’s got answers if we listen with more than our ears and see with more than our eyes.

This inspiring and imaginative play is based on The New York Times bestseller that won a Newbery Medal, Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, and a Caldecott Honor.

Learn more about the play by listening to this WHUP Lights Up interview with director Terra Hodge and Gabriella Terrero (“Nana”). You can also read about the cast and production team in our digital show program

Last Stop on Market Street runs on Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00pm and 4:00pm, September 16-24, in our outdoor Stephenson Amphitheatre. We encourage you to pack a picnic and enjoy a beautiful day out at the theatre!

Accessibility notes:

  • The 1:00pm performance on Saturday, September 23, is sensory-friendly and designed especially for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, sensory sensitivities, or other disabilities.
  • The Sunday, September 24, performance at 4:00pm features audio description for those with visual disabilities.
  • We recently completed an accessible pathway project in the amphitheatre and are happy to share patrons with wheelchairs or limited mobility can now access the top, bottom, and middle sections of the amphitheatre. This also creates a more accessible and direct path from our main parking lot down to the rose garden. This project was generously funded by the Pope Foundation, and we hope you’ll enjoy exploring the new path!

Special thanks to our show sponsor, First Citizens Bank, and our Family Series Media Sponsor, Triangle Family Magazine

This program is funded in part by the City of Raleigh based on recommendations of the Raleigh Arts Commission and is supported by the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, as well as the N.C Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Volunteer open houses coming up soon!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Backstage Night last month - we loved seeing familiar faces and meeting so many new people! Now that you have the general knowledge of volunteering at RLT, it’s time to focus in on the areas you’d really like to try. That’s where our open houses come in!

This is a great opportunity to get familiar with what happens at the theatre if you're relatively new, to learn about a different area of volunteering at RLT than what you've done before, or to simply meet more volunteers!

Mark your calendar for our open houses:

  • Tools of the Scene Shop: Saturday, September 16
  • Lighting: Sunday, September 24
  • Dresser: Thursday, September 28
  • Props & Scenic: Saturday, September 30
  • Front of House: Sunday, October 1
  • Sound & Projections: Date TBD first week of November
  • Sound Setup Open House/Work Call: Date TBD mid-November
